This year's KIDS COUNT Data Book portrays long-term as well as one-year changes in indicators of well-being by comparing current data with data from the year 2000. The 21st annual Data Book is complemented by the expanded Virginia KIDS COUNT Data Center, which contains hundreds of measures of child well-being and allows users to create maps and graphs of data at the national, state,county, and city level. - How do kids fare in the federal budget? Voices partner First Focus, just released two new reports that shed light on this issue. Children’s Budget 2010 provides an analysis of the over 180 federally funded programs that are aimed at enhancing the well-being of our nation’s children, and how their appropriations levels have changed over the past five years. Kids’ Share 2010 is the fourth annual examination of the federal spending trends and tax policies that support and affect children and families.
- Voices for Virginia's Children, in partnership with The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, has released a Portrait of Children in Northern Virginia, a report examining the critical needs of 530,000 children in Northern Virginia. - Reading proficiency by the end of third grade is a critical benchmark in a child’s educational development. Too many children in Virginia reach fourth grade without learning to read proficiently. On May 18th, 2010 the Annie E. Casey Foundation in partnership with Voices for Virginia’s Children released a KIDS COUNT Special Report, Early Warning! Why Reading by the End of Third Grade Matters about why reading matters and what we can do to raise the bar and close the gap for all children. Listen to. - Voices' partner, First Focus, recently launched ChildrensBudget.org, a user-friendly, dynamic, interactive website that allows you to discover annual funding information for each federally supported program that aims to help our nation’s children.
