Briefings on Early Childhood in Virginia

Posted:  -  By: Voices for VA's Kids

Early childhood education has been a hot topic this year. Both gubernatorial candidates have included policies in their campaign platform’s to expand access to preschool opportunities. Young children enrolled in Head Start have bared the brunt of sequestration cuts and the shutdown.  As we look to a new Administration and upcoming legislative session, what issues are most important for our policymakers to address? At this briefing we will review where Virginia currently standards on early childhood education. We will translate the data and recommendations from several recent reports into the reality that Virginia’s early childhood stakeholders and leaders must address in the upcoming months and years. Join us for a Briefing in Richmond on Wednesday, November 13th at 11:00 AM at the Partnership for Families- Northside (800 W. Graham Rd.). Join us for a Briefing in Northern Virginia on Friday, December 6th at 10:00 AM at the Reston Fairfax County YMCA. The materials we will cover in the briefing are from the following reports:

  • The James Madison University Needs Assessment is not available on line yet but they have created a great video, based on information gathered through their assessment, that highlights the child care field in Virginia. Watch here
  • Virginia Early Childhood Foundation’s School Readiness Report Card can be found here.
  • The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s The First Eight Years is available here with more Virginia specific data in our KIDS COUNT Data Center.
  • There is also great outcome data in Investing in Our Future: The Evidence Base on Preschool Education.
