There are a few hotly contested races for seats in the Virginia legislature this year. One high profile contest in a competitive district is the 10th Senate District covering Richmond, Chesterfield and Powhatan. (Read more about this race in Style Weekly’s “The Race to Watch“. Find more detail on the district and the candidates at vpap.org.)  This is an open seat as Senator John Watkins will retire after serving in the legislature for 33 years. This race could determine the balance of power in the Virginia Senate. Whoever is elected to this seat will be making significant decisions impacting children and families in this district, and across Virginia.

That is why it is important that voters hear directly from the candidates about their positions on children’s issues. Voices is pleased to sponsor a Forum on Tuesday, August 18th for the 10th Senate District candidates hosted by WCVE at the Community Idea Stations (23 Sesame St. Chesterfield, VA 23235) The Forum will be an opportunity to hear more about each candidate’s positions on issues impacting Virginia’s children– poverty and opportunity, early childhood education, mental health and foster care– as well as other topics of concern to the general public.

The Forum will include all of the announced candidates for the 10th District– Marleen Durfee (Independent), Dan Gecker (Democrat), Carl  Loser (Libertarian) and Glen Sturtevant (Republican). Half of the topics will be questions specifically focused on children’s issues that the candidates will see in advance.
