About VAYA
Virginia’s Youth in Action (VAYA) is a competitive, statewide youth policy and advocacy leadership program for 10–12 young people ages 15 to 24 who are ready to explore public policy, advocacy, and community engagement.
For Applicants Under 18
Please review the following with your guardian:
Your intention to apply to the VAYA program
The requirement for both you and your guardian to attend a virtual information session if accepted
The need for your guardian to sign all required documents before the program begins
Your ability to attend all required in-person events in Richmond

Learn the Foundations
Build Your Power
Explore issues like mental health, education, health care, foster care, and economic justice while discovering how your voice can influence change.
Grow Your Skills
Develop strengths in research, storytelling, time management, and public speaking that support you far beyond this program.
Find Your Community
Connect with peers across Virginia who care about equity and justice and build relationships that last.
Learn from Leaders
Receive mentorship from advocates, policy experts, and youth leaders actively shaping change.
Use Your Voice
Engage with lawmakers, community members, and media to advocate for what matters most.
Be Recognized
Up to $750 scholarship awarded upon successful completion of the program.

VAYA includes monthly virtual trainings, required in-person convenings, and key commitments to help you fully prepare for the program experience.
Monthly Trainings & Workshops
Most sessions take place virtually via Zoom on Saturday mornings from 10:00–11:30 AM.
In-Person Convenings
There are two required in-person convenings in Richmond, Virginia:
Attendance on these dates is mandatory. Applicants who cannot attend will not be eligible.
If travel presents a barrier, we encourage you to reach out—our team is available to help explore options and provide support where possible.
Travel & Accommodations
- Travel reimbursement is available for participants outside of Richmond
- Overnight accommodations provided for January 17, 2027
- Additional accommodations may be reviewed case-by-case
Post-Acceptance Commitment
Accepted participants must attend a required onboarding session to review expectations and sign participation documents.
Participants under 18 must attend with a caregiver.

Application Process
The application process includes two steps:
1. Application
Submit a written application and a written or video essay.
2. Group Interview
Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a virtual group interview.
Timeline
Submit your application by Thursday, April 30.
If selected for a group interview, you will be notified by May 1 with your scheduled time, Zoom link, and interview details based on the availability you provided in your application.
Interviews will be offered during one of the following times:
- Thursday, May 7, 5:30–7:00 PM
- Tuesday, May 12, 5:00–6:30 PM
- Wednesday, May 13, 6:00–7:30 PM
- Saturday, May 16, 10:00–11:30 AM
If accepted into the VAYA program, you will be notified by Friday, May 22 with the next steps.
