Our Priorities

Young people in Virginia must have equitable access to the resources necessary for a lifetime of good health.

Health is determined not only by the absence of illness, but by equitable access to high-quality, affordable, and culturally responsive care. Poverty and structural racism cause devastating health disparities among young people in Virginia. Ensuring the health of our young people requires affordable health insurance coverage, a diverse and well-educated health care workforce, and increased opportunities for access to health care.

4.6% of young people in Virginia are uninsured.

Nearly 2 million Virginians, including 750,000 young people, rely on Medicaid/FAMIS for their health insurance coverage, and we must ensure that this vital program is easy to navigate and that structural barriers to accessing coverage are removed. Far too often, young people and families face obstacles as they seek care, including administrative guidelines and burdens, language and literacy barriers, and discriminatory immigration status requirements. It will take intentional policy choices to ensure every young person in Virginia — regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or immigration status — has access to the healthy life they deserve.
