Introducing the 2026-2027 Virginia’s Youth in Action Cohort

  • VAYA

Meet the young leaders, advocates, storytellers, and changemakers joining Voices for the year ahead.

We are thrilled to introduce the 2026–2027 Virginia’s Youth in Action (VAYA) cohort! Over the next nine months, these incredible young people will come together to learn, lead, connect, and create change. By exploring policy, advocacy, storytelling, and community engagement, they will deepen their understanding of the systems that shape their lives and communities, strengthen their leadership and advocacy skills, and harness the power of their lived, living, and ancestral experiences.

We are so excited for this cohort’s ideas, insights, and vision to strengthen our work and help shape the future of our communities. We invite our partners, supporters, and community members to join us in welcoming these young leaders and to engage with them throughout the year ahead. We hope you will see them not simply as participants in a program, but as storytellers, advocates, and changemakers whose voices matter now. We are honored to learn alongside them and excited for all that we will build together in the months to come.

Zaharra

Zaharra

she/her

Zaharra is a Charlottesville-based recent high school graduate drawn to how stories, systems, and economics shape the way people live, move, and belong across communities and cultures. This summer, she is serving as both a NAACP intern at the Central Library and an Arts Educator Intern with the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, where she helps support the development of culturally grounded programming. Zaharra is especially interested in international political economy and the human side of policy: who it reaches, who it leaves out, and what it asks of people in return, and she is pursuing a path toward the U.S. Foreign Service alongside a long-term vision of building a community-based nonprofit that expands mentorship, access, and youth-driven action. Her vision is informed by her experience growing up mixed Ethiopian and Italian and being raised by a single mother.

We also acknowledge and celebrate the young people who are not pictured or named in this blog. In honoring their privacy and preferences, we have chosen not to share their identities publicly. Though not featured here, they are an important part of this cohort and the journey ahead.

We’re excited to see what we build together.

Thank you for joining us in welcoming the 2026–2027 Virginia’s Youth in Action cohort. We look forward to learning alongside them, supporting their leadership, and sharing more of their work in the months ahead.
