Virginia’s Youth in Action is Back—Apply Now to Join the 2025 Cohort 

We are thrilled to announce the return of Virginia’s Youth in Action (VAYA)—a reimagined youth leadership program designed to equip young advocates with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to drive real change in their communities and across the commonwealth. After a thoughtful pause to listen, reflect, and redesign the program, Voices for Virginia’s Children is proud to relaunch VAYA with a fresh vision and renewed commitment to youth-led advocacy.  

What is VAYA? 

Virginia’s Youth in Action (VAYA) is a statewide youth policy council for individuals ages 15 to 24 who are ready to explore the world of public policy and advocacy. Whether you’ve had years of experience organizing in your community or you’re just starting to find your voice, VAYA is for you. 

The program is centered around three core values: 

• Lived Experience: Your story and perspective matter—and they’re powerful tools for change. 

• Leadership Development: VAYA equips you with the skills to speak up, show up, and lead with confidence. 

• Policy Engagement: From the statehouse to your school board, you’ll learn how policies are made and how to influence them.

Members of the 2025 VAYA cohort will: 

• Explore policy issues such as mental health, early care and education, health care, foster care, and economic justice. 

• Develop professional skills like research, storytelling, time management, and public speaking. 

• Build relationships with peers across Virginia who are passionate about equity and justice. 

• Receive mentorship and training from advocates, policy experts, and fellow youth leaders. 

• Have opportunities to share their stories with lawmakers, community members, and media. 

This is not just a leadership program. It’s a platform to take action, build community, and shape a more just and compassionate Virginia. 

Who Should Apply? 

We welcome applications from youth ages 15–24 who live in Virginia and want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. We’re especially excited to hear from those who bring unique perspectives and identities—including those with lived experience with the foster care system, behavioral health services, or economic hardship. 

There is no one-size-fits-all background for VAYA. If you’re curious, committed, and willing to grow, we encourage you to apply. 

What’s in the Application? 

Applicants will be asked to: 

• Share basic demographic information and areas of lived experience or policy interest 

• Complete a short self-assessment of their skills and comfort levels 

• Choose to submit either a short video or written essay introducing themselves 

This helps us get to know applicants beyond the basics—and begin to build a program that supports their unique strengths and goals.
